Hometown Heroes Banner Program Notice
American Legion Post 171 in Damascus has faithfully supported numerous veteran and community activities…it is at the core of who we are as a community of local veterans. We have been and will remain longtime advocates for our veterans, our first responders, and other public servants.
Unfortunately, certain attempts to obligate us to a nascent initiative in Damascus have been made in our name recently by persons unaffiliated with the Post, without our awareness and concurrence, regarding the Hometown Heroes Banner Program, to include activities that could open us up to scrutiny by the IRS and jeopardize our tax-exempt status. We cannot be a party to attempts to subvert tax laws.
As we have explained to the principals of the program, we find merit in the concept but have questions regarding its implementation and the life-cycle cost. As a consequence, our possible future involvement with this effort is on hold until we receive additional requested details on the overall administration of the program, the selection criteria (see requirements on similar programs on the Mt Airy and Middletown community websites), and the logistics and maintenance.

We are American Legion Post 171 in Damascus, Maryland. We are veterans, men, and women who have served honorably in the armed forces as prescribed by law. The Post was founded in the fall of 1945.
Our Post includes more than 300 Legionnaires, who, like all American Legion (www.legion.org) members, are volunteers who serve with a commitment to support our fellow service members and veterans, mentor our young Americans, sponsor community service programs, and advocate for strengthening our nation’s defense and security, patriotism and honor.
Damascus Post 171’s Legion Family includes our Auxiliary Unit 171 (spouses of veterans) (www.alaforveterans.org) and Sons of the American Legion Squadron 171 (www.legion.org/sons).
We raise money for our activities and charitable donations with weekly cash Bingo on Thursday evenings and public events like shrimp feasts and oyster roasts at various times each year. We invite you to join us for these events.
Our Legion Family organizations meet monthly on the second Monday with the SAL and Unit meeting at 7 PM. The American Legion Post 171 meets at 7:30. All meetings are at the Post Home located at 10201 Lewis Drive, Damascus, Maryland 20872. We are continuously seeking and welcoming new members. If interested in becoming one of us in the Post, Auxiliary, or SAL Squadron, please contact us at (301) 253-0769 or email@example.com
